I've been hearing a lot of hype about Five Guys Burgers and Fries for a long while now. I've read the hype on the Internet and heard all about the place on radio and TV for a few years, so on a trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast this weekend I was excited to see that Five Guys had opened a location in D'Iberville Mississippi. The location is in the new D'Iberville Promenade Shopping Center which is right off of I-10 at the I-110 exit north, it's very easy to get to. The store and shopping center must have just opened because Five Guys and the other stores were packed on a Sunday morning.
When we entered the place, the line was pretty long but the time flew by fast when I started thinking about how good the burger would be. Like I had heard the menu was pretty basic: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs and fries. I ordered my hamburger with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and pickles and got a large fry to share with the others eating with me. I grabbed some peanuts to munch on while waiting for the food and sat down.

Before long our order was ready. With Five Guys a burger really means a double burger. I was surprised to see two patties, and with the toppings piled high it was really a task to eat. Now, the two patties aren't the biggest patties in the world, each one is about the size of a Wendy's patty, but stacked with the big bun it made it look huge.

The burger was a little better than okay. Nothing too special, the patties were kind of greasy, but the problem was with the buns. They don't toast their buns at Five Guys and it made for one messy eating experience. Because of the grease and mayo and the bun not being toasted the burger just fell apart after a few bites and was such a mess, I had to get a fork and just eat parts of the burger instead of eating it like a burger like you're supposed to. I didn't mind that too much, but the burger would have been so much better with a toasted bun. The taste of the hamburger patties were okay, a little too greasy.
The worst part of the experience had to be the fries. When you get to the counter to order you see a sign telling you where there potatoes came from that day, big deal, since these fries are horrible. They call these things "home fries" but let me tell you, it's nothing like the home fries I cook at home. I'm a big fan of home fries and have been known to make a meal out of nothing but home fries. But these were some lame home fries. They were soggy and tasted like they weren't cooked enough. And I like my home fries peeled all the way and these still had some peelings on them. I wasn't the only one with the same opinion about the fries, nobody at our table had more than a few bites and I talked to a few people around me that had the same opinion.

So to wrap it up, don't believe the hype. There are many more places to get a burger better than this one (in fact, we had a better burger at the Hard Rock Casino the day before). The food is also more expensive than regular "fast food" places. My large fries cost about $4.49 and a drink cost me $1.99. My entire bill for 2 burgers, a large fry, and 2 drinks was over $20. I'm glad I tried Five Guys Burgers and Fries and now that it's out of my system I doubt if I'll be visiting again on my next trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Are you freaking insane?? 5 Guys is crazy delicious! And "home fries" always have the skins on them. ALWAYS! That's one of the things that distinguishes them as "home fries". Maybe you left your fries closed up in the brown bag for too long. Of course the steam off the hot fresh cooked fries would make them soggy if you left them shut up in the bag for too long. Personally, my 5 Guys fries have never been short of perfect, and I regard them as the BEST fries of anywhere!!
ReplyDeleteAlso, regarding the price - the quality of food at Five Guys is *FAR* superior to some place like say, McDonald's, so yeah I don't really think it's overpriced at all. Sorry they don't have ammonia-soaked-beef dollar burgers for you. Sorry the fries *actually* resemble PO-TA-TOES! Seriously.
Five Guys has PLENTY of raving reviews from people with a lot more cred and stature than you, pal...

Get over yourself. Thx.
First off, you must work for 5 Guys with a link to the 5 Guys Press page. Second off, I've had home fries at a lot of places without the skins on, that were much better than 5 guys. I wasn't the only one complaining about the fries when I visited, I talked to people on both sides of me that agreed the fries were soggy and didn't taste cooked enough (maybe a bad day for these guys). Third, I don't mind paying more for a good quality burger, but the problem was that this was not a good quality burger... Go to Phil's Grill in New Orleans, now that's a burger I'd pay more money for, not a greasy tasteless burger like this. And $2.00 for a measly drink, Outrageous!! Oh yea, before you say everyone raves about 5 guys, there are tons of reviews out there that have the same or worse opinion as me.. check out the comments on, http://www.stumptownlunch.com/2008/11/08/review-five-guys-burgers-and-fries/ , and on http://www.sanantonioburger.com/2009/04/review-15-five-guys-burgers-and-fries.html , and that's just two. Again, I gave it a C, it was mediocre, not great, not terrible, but a place I won't eat at again.
ReplyDeleteYes, I must work for 5 Guys to be able to pull a link from the chain's website. Brilliant deduction there. No really.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, the review you linked had this to say:
"Pros: Delicious burgers and fries, fresh ingredients, good selection of toppings, portions are HUGE, prices are budget-friendly
Cons: Wait for our order was a tad long (about 10 minutes), they could be a little more environmentally friendly"
Yeah, they really HATED it.
She doesn't work for Five Guys, she just has low standards.
ReplyDeleteThe fries do suck, and yes, the burgers are mediocre.
S - I said read the COMMENTS, it shows that the opinions of 5 Guys is hit, miss, or mediocre. I gave it a C - Mediocre. I wouldn't read a press page from the company to get honest opinions about the place. Sorry I hurt your feelings by rating it a C.
ReplyDeleteNot that I have to defend my review, but as you can see a lot of people have the same opinion as me... http://wouldibuyitagain.com/2009/06/five-guys-burgers-and-fries/
ReplyDeleteHarold, I have a Five Guys that just opened up here in IL I've been meaning to try just because there new and I was curious?? what type of resturaunt they were ? Now I know and will give you my opinion on there food!
ReplyDeleteThere's a lot of company's that open up and at first everything is good and neat then all of a sudden the food and service takes a turn for the worst under cooked, over cooked and just plain sloppy and it comes down to plano just get the Money!!
I gonna give it a try especially the fries.
If anyone knows food I know Food!! This is what I do best.
Harold, These guys really didn't give the fries much thought as so many people are allergic to (Peanuts) and they use peanut oil for the french fries ! I was watching the food channel ? the other night and heard they use peanut oil for frying. HEY MY KIDS are very allergic to "Peanuts" That's not very smart.
ReplyDeleteYour Mouth words are a little to greasy for my taste
ReplyDeletehey abitaman five guys just opened up a chain in the westcoast I was thinking of trying it now ill wait -Sdrivers17
ReplyDeleteWho gives a crap if your kids are allergic to frickin' peanuts! All kids today seemed to be allergic to everything from picking their nose to breathing ... wimps!
ReplyDeleteDie already!
Survival of the fittest ... and if your kid can't hack the real world, you must have bad genes.
